I'd Love to Have A Few Hens!

When I was growing up, we raised chickens and I  had the job of collecting the eggs.  Just recently I was thinking how I'd like to have at least four hens.

Since I live in a subdivision, that's prohibited.  But if it wasn't, here's what I'd want need for my feathered ladies.  This little coop would be so attractive in my backyard.

This is called a "redneck chicken coop" and I think it's kind of cute.  I don't think my neighbors would see it that way!

I'd have to have a chicken tractor to prevent the "ladies" from being herded by the corgi girls.

Chicken tractor which can moved around for better grazing.

I'd have the same breeds that I was familiar with as a child.  They'd have old time names like Henrietta, Gladys, Ermine and the white one would be Priscilla.

Of course I'd  add one of the prissy little exotic breeds.  If I'd seen a chicken like this when I was a child I would have run for cover!  Doesn't she look like she needs a string of pearls?

Since none of my chicken dreams will be coming true, I have to settle for my current hens whose families are growing like The Old Woman in the Shoe.

  1. I could have written this post! Having cared for those baby chicks last week, it only reinforced how much I would love to have my own flock. But unfortunately now isn't the right time, but when I do, I want a fun little place for them to live like your first photo!!

  2. The shoe planters are such fun. We'd love chickens too but having a garden the size of a postage stamp it is a no no. Actually liked the redneck coop. Have a super Saturday.
    Best wishes Molly

  3. Oh well, at least you won't have to clean the chicken poo off the porch, like I do! I dearly love my chickens though, and they do have old time names, like Peggy, Lil and Esmeralda.

  5. I think chickens would be great, too. My father used to have Auracana chickens. They laid colored eggs...all manner of pastel beauties! Wouldn't Tag be tickled? lol
